Minor Division 5 Final - April 27 2015

Man O’ War 0 – 11  :   Foxrock Cabinteely B:  3 – 3

What a game and what a result.   Our Minor B team travelled to Man O’ War on a cold windy Monday evening and brought the League Cup back home.  We played with a strong wind in the first half but despite a couple of good early attacks, we found ourselves 2 points down after 7 minutes to a very mobile and direct Man O’War team.  We settled and, after unlucky missed goal chances from Lucy Hartigan and Bea Jackson, a shot from Ciara Begley eventually found the back of the net off 2 defenders.  This settled us and we followed up soon with a classy Rebecca Tonge goal.  The loss of Amy Egan after 16 minutes upset our rhythm and Man o’War threatened our goal on a number of occasions but we defended stoutly.  Points from Eimear Hickey and Rebecca Tonge saw us in at half time with a 6 point lead.

The second half was all about courage and concentration.  It needed tight marking, blocking, and working the ball up to the forwards for increasingly rare attacks.  However, roared on by a large home crowd, Man O’War picked off points and with 15 minutes to go they were a point up.  Many teams would have lain down but not these girls. We stormed back up the field and pressed Man o’War back.  Determined running from Rebecca Clarke, Erin Walshe and Catriona Murdiff eventually saw the ball worked into Clea Culloty who smashed home a goal.  Back came Man O’ War and picked off 2 points, one a fine save by Roisin Sherwood, who was the coolest player on the pitch!  Five minutes left and we asked them for one last push.  Great work from the back by Rachel Murray, Anne Spain and Sarah Quinless got Rebecca Tonge in for a run at goal.  Man o’War took her down 20 yards out.  Up steeped Eimear Hickey, captain on the night, and facing into the strong wind, showed nerves of steel to split the posts.

The next 5 minutes were terrifying yet terrific.  Every girl defended every step of the way with Sorcha Walsh, Niamh Ring and Alison Keane unbeatable.  Eden Quiqley led the midfield battle with Saoirse Morgan Fenenessy and Alannah Hedderman working back to support her.  With Jane Byrne and Aoife Bell ready to come in to support the final push, the referee finally blew the whistle to great relief and excitement for a victory won with no little skill and great heart.  This team came together from a mix of 3 teams and support from our U16 squad.  They have worked hard at training and bonded really well.  They have grown in skill and confidence in each game they played and in this game we saw girls showing leadership on and off the pitch and a will to compete and win.

Congrats to Man O’War for a very tough but fair match.  They are an excellent team who had beaten us earlier in the season and had gone unbeaten for 10 competitive matches before this.  The match was very well refereed by George McAllister.

Special thanks to Team Manager Bernie Hedderman; Asst Manager Denise Connor; Coach Paul Begley; Fitness Coaches Paul Walsh and Brian Walshe; and Goal Keeper Coach Peter Murray.  Thanks also to some of our panel who couldn’t make the final due to school and other commitments: Ciara Somers; Sadhbh McCaul; Niamh Cullen; and  Rachel Noone;  and to Rachel Ring, Isobel Jackson and Sophie Merrigan who have played with us in some earlier games.  All have contributed hugely to this great result.
